About this stamp

British comedian Spike Milligan was known for his surreal, stream-of-consciousness humour. He was co-creator, writer and a principal cast member of hit BBC radio programme ‘The Goon Show’ that ran from 1951 to 1960.

Published on April Fool’s Day, 2015, the Comedy Greats Special Stamps collection pays tribute to some of the most cherished British comedy acts.

Combining an imaginative mix of colour and monochrome images, the 10 stamps feature individuals, double acts and comedy ensembles who have brought laughter to millions. Each stamp also features miniature scenes depicting classic sketches, hilarious routines, characters and costumes from the seminal comedy acts.

The collection focuses on performers who emerged from the tradition of stand-up and sketch show artists, rather than those more widely regarded as comic actors.
